Social Sites
A friend of mine is now working at
Hill Country Outdoors. It is a social club located in Austin. I think of it as Meetup but with a limited geographic area (Austin) and a focus on outdoor activities. Seems like an interesting idea. The are so many variations on "social sites." You have online dating, friendster, orkut, meetup, evite, flickr, blogging, etc. It is interesting to see how it all evolves. All of it seems related but different. It seems like it will converge somehow but I have no idea how. Will there every be a site that provides blogs, allows you to meet people to date, share pictures, setup parties, and linkup all your friends. If it existed would people use it?
I was reading this
post from JWZ and I think he says it best:
"Social software" is about making it easy for people to do other things that make them happy: meeting, communicating, and hooking up.
If you are building a consumer-oriented social site, then I think that is your one and only use case.
